A designer lessons ESL lesson plan developed by George Chilton
This is a simple video, comprehension and discussion related to giving up money – aimed at intermediate adults and teens. I’ve kept this one free of too many ideas because I’d really like to see what you do with it – in what direction you took the discussion, and also how your students reacted to Daniel Suelo’s philosophy. Here is Suelo’s blog – if you’d like extra authentic material.
Lesson Aims
- Listening comprehension
- 2nd conditional
- Discussion
Stage One – Warmer
Ask your students how they would spend a day in their city/town/village without spending any money. What activities could they do? They’re not allowed to stay at home, they have to be out of the house for the whole day.
Put them in small groups and get them to come up with a plan of the day – from 10am until 8pm. Conditions – They are allowed to drink water from city water fountains and any food that they find. They should present their plans at the end of this activity – making sure that everyone in the group gets a chance to speak.
Monitor and get feedback from the class – and do an error correction slot (EC) at the end.
Stage Two – Video / listening comprehension.
I’d recommend using http://zamzar.com to download the video from Youtube pre-class.
Give them the comprehension questions below – and play the video twice. Ask them to do the activity individually. Follow up by getting them to compare answers in their groups. Do an EC slot.
If the video disappears, you can find it at source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17762033

Put your students in small groups of 3 -4. Ask them to discuss the following questions. Monitor, do on the spot corrections. Take notes of errors to help them as a whole group in a final EC slot.
- Could you live a complete and happy life without money?
- Where would you live?
- What would you miss the most?
- Imagine the scenario – how would a whole society survive without money?
If you want to, give them the 2nd conditional structure – if they need to practise.
If + past simple + subject + would / could +clause
Follow-up
Ask your students to research Daniel Suelo on the net – there are plenty of YouTube videos. They could also have a look at hs blog. Get them to report back their findings in the beginning of the next class.

I would like to know if law enforcement gives him a hard time for living in the cave?
Hi Taelin,
I’m not sure of the laws involved, but he’s doing no harm. If it is illegal I’d image the police would turn a blind eye to it as he’s doing no harm 🙂 I can’t find any mention of it online anyway. He has a blog – you could always ask him directly!

Thanks George, I’ve been to his blog but have been unable to find a link or place to ask any questions. All I see are the FAQ but I’m not allowed to comment on anything. Any ideas?
Hey, no problem – he uses blogspot, so the set up is a little different – if you scroll right to the bottom of the page there’s a link for comments. It looks like he answers them quite regularly – you can get to it here too:

Thanks again George, the link worked great and I was able to post a question. Have a great day!
You’re welcome! I’m pleased it worked 🙂
Hi! Would you mind if I share your blog with my facebook group?
There’s a lot of people that I think would really enjoy your content. Please let me know. Thanks
Hi, no problem at all. We’re very happy when people share our content – thanks!
A question that I am going to add to the discussion is ‘What obstacles are you going to have to face to obtain this lifestyle?’ and ‘How do you think society will perceive you once you have made this change?’ and ‘Do you think that this is something that is easier to do in the US or in your native country? Why or why not?’
I will see how it goes.
Hi. I love this lesson. However I’ve tried it with Intermediates and found that the video was a bit above their level in terms of being able to follow. It works much better with stronger students in my experience.
Also, I found these questions about Money to be a great addition to the lesson:

Thanks for the contribution.
Those could could be used as an addition to the warmer
You should take part in a contest for one of the greatest
sites online. I will highly recommend this web site!
Hello, George, and thank you for this resource. I was looking for something related to money for my students. In my case, my students have a lower intermediate level, so I think I’ll give them an introduction to read before showing them the video and I’ll give them some activity to do while watching, so comprehension is easier.
But for later, I was thinking that it would be a good idea to us them to compare the life of a millionaire, or a Hollywood celebrity to Daniel Suelo’s life. They could practise comparison structures in this way. But then, I think we could discuss what things are really necessary in life for them, considering that the two lives compared are the extremes.
The guy let him through with no responsibility and no paperwork.
